Mink Frog (Rana septentrionalis), colored pencil

About the illustration:
Commissioned by: Wisconsin Sea Grant, University of Wisconsin-Madison

About mink frogs:
Mink frogs are found in the Northern U.S. and Canada. They smell like mink (which Wikipedia says smells like rotting onions!) They are about 2 or 3 inches long. The throats of males are yellow, while the females' throats are white. As with the leopard frog, there is concern about deformities found in increasing numbers. Mink frogs breed from June to July. They eat aquatic and flying insects and worms.

Taxonomy:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata (having a spinal chord)
Class: Amphibia
Order: Anura (frogs and toads)
Family: Ranidae (true frogs)
Genus: Lithobates
Species: L. septentrioalis
