Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis):
About Eastern Bluebirds:
The eastern bluebird is a thrush. Thrushes are small or medium-sized birds
that inhabit woodland areas, farmlands and orchards. They feed on the
ground, eating insects and berries. They build cup-shaped nests and lay
from two to five light blue eggs. The nests are made from plant materials
such as dried grass and pine needles. Both of the parents raise the young.
The bluebird population was threatened due to predation by house sparrows and
European starlings, pesticides, and habitat destruction. Birders provided
nesting boxes for them, which has allowed for the return of their numbers.
The Bluebird is the state bird of Missouri and New York.
The Eastern bluebird lives about six years. It is found in the eastern half
of the United States (east of the Rockies) and southern Canada.
