About spottail shiners:
Spottail shiners are minnows (Family Cyprinidae) found in North American steams, rivers, and estuaries. They eat larvae of insects, clams, small crustaceans, fish eggs, plants, and smaller shiners. They live up to five years. Spottail shiners spawn in the spring.
