About backswimmers:
Backswimmers swim upside-down. They eat aquatic insects and small vertebrates like tadpoles and small fish. They live in slow-flowing shallow streams, freshwater pools, and ponds throughout North America. The bite feels like a bee sting. They are about 5 to 15 mm.
